I'm no expert by any means but I would have to disagree here. Power steering fluid, just like brake fluid is nothin more then fancy Hydraulic fluid and hydraulic fluid breaks down and loses its ability to work. I've had brake pedals go all the way to the floor with nothin there, change the brake fluid and they work great again. I can tell in my tractors when the hydraulic fluid is shot cause the end loaders gets weak. Change the fluid and it's good as new.

It also seems to help just to pull the old out and add new with some fresh new detergent in it to clean some of the gunk out that has gathered. But just different opinions, not to say one is right or wrong cause I sure don't know.

As far as brakes go... Try bleeding them now and then. Other thing is that brake fluid absorbs water, which contains oxygen, which compresses much more than pure brake fluid. Hydraulic oil (PS Fluid) however does not absorb water, so it doesn't compress so easily. As I said though, it will aerate, which gives a much lower pressure, and therefore increases effort required to turn.

Generally however, it takes thousands of hours for the oil to break down that much, at least the oils we tested at Dana did. I wasn't part of that test division, but a lot of old timers like to talk to ya when you're in on the weekends...

The power steering pump looses pressure your brake booster (Hydra-booster used on '97+ Rams) also looses pressure. The PS pump supplies the pressure to the booster.

Mine feels the same way, 2001, I havent changed the fluid.... its at the full mark on the dipstick...

I never really looked but are there any synthetic options at napa or somewhere in town

i have herd of a synthetic power steering fluid but i forgot were in the hell i seen it at, that lucas powersteering conditioner works really well
