Cracked Timing Gear Housing....Help?
I recently changed my VP pump and didn't have it loose from the bracket on the block so when I kept turning the puller I think I pulled the gear into the timing gear cover, stressing the housing and causing an oil leak. When inspecting I discovered a crack all the way across the housing with grinding marks on both sides of the crack. I suspect it had been welded by previous owner. I just bought the truck a few months back and though I'm mechanically inclined, I don't have much experience with diesels. Questions:
1- Any body have any luck stopping this kind of leak with red silicone? It's not a pressure leak.
2- Any body have info/link for removing the cam properly?
Thanks guys, first post.

Doubtful any sealant will work long term, but you can try. Doesn't hurt to try, and doesn't cost much.

That is for a common rail, but the procedure is almost identical. Just a different fuel system.

Thanks RAW. Fortunately when I got the cover off I found out what I thought was a crack in the housing was cast mark from the mold

I'm just gonna get a KDP kit and put it all back together and try to live righter and hope it doesn't leak.
