Default power steering pump

On my 01 when it gets below 40* when you start it cold and turn the wheel or step on the brakes it growls until it warms up and its full of power steering fluid. It only happens during the winter time. Any ideas would be helpful

I had the same exact problem when I brought my truck home. I ended up changing the fluid to full synthetic, and it helped reduce the noise drastically. (Here in the interior we see -40 every now and again). I'm willing to bet that if I dropped some $$$ on an upgraded power steering pump and arctic grade power steering hoses, the sound would go away completely.

I had the same problem, I checked the pump it looked full but the pump is really sensitive to fluid level just put a slight amount in and it should go away, or keep the truck plugged in, its the rapid change in temperature that causes the fluid to evaporate or leak or whatever

Just let the truck warm up. When its cold the fluid gets super thick. It'll be fine. Just make sure the fluids are where they're supposed to be and you'll be fine.

I changed mine over to royal purple this past fall and I haven't had any of the typical moaning during turns or squishing sounds while braking and it's a brisk 1 degree above zero here in Indiana
