Default 24v lift pump issues

i have a 98.5 24v ... the guy i bought it off of had a new lift pump and injection pump put on. when they did this they put a low pressure light on the dash in case of lp failure again.. the light started coming on when id get into it or pulling a heavy load.. i changed the filter. which didnt fix it.. so i put an airtex lp on.. fixed it for about a wk.. so i put a guage on thinking the light was junk. it idled at 8psi then would go to zero when revving to about 2000 rpm.iv put 4 lp's on now each lasting about a wk. when i first put em on its at 18psi idle 10psi wot. now my truck will idle at 12 psi but drops to 3 psi around 2000 rpm.. is this another bad pump or am i missing somethin?? no leaks and no power loss.. jus afraid of burning up the injection pump..

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

i didnt have any of these problems tilll i took the muffler off and silencer ring out.. i dont see how that would cause this issue?? maybe im overlooking something tho??

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

i can hook the lp directly to the battery and its still the same psi.. so im ruling out an electrical issue?? been fighting this problem now for about 2 months

My Advice is been there, seen it, done it, quit wasting your money on chinese made lps and bolt on a fass pump and enjoy running your cummins WOT all day!

Do you have an in tank pump? If so, adding another block or frame mounted pump doesn't work. The pump you put on will be sucking through the in tank, and burning itself out.

Have you changed your pressure regulating valve? It is built into the return banjo bolt for the VP44. $30, and could save a lot of headaches.

I dont think that a 98.5 has an in tank pump unless some moron boogered one in to it, even if it does, you are right it cant be run in tandem with another pump so it should be removed any way.

The retrofit was done on all year vp trucks as far as I know. I know I've seen some 98/99 trucks with retro fits.

I believe that ALL 98-02 RAM TRUCKS 24V had the same exact external mounted lp that is mounted on the left side of the engine, and the install instructions with a fass pump say to by-pass it anyway!

it jus has the external lp. i havent checked the regulating valve.. i put the airtex in and they keep warranty'n it out for me.. they said if it went bad again theyd give me a refund.. jus wanted to make sure it was the actual pump and not somethin stupid i was overlookin that goes wrong. thanks for the help.. ill check the valve then order the fass system for it

i was also told to check the pickup screen in the tank by a shop in town... but if i pull the sending unit out the lines are rusted and are gonna break.. would that be a waste of time or should i jus get the new pickup and sending unit?

Yes, they came from the factory that was. When they failed, dealerships would install an in tank pump as an upgrade. It was a horrible idea.

You could get another sending unit just in case, it would reduce down time. Unless a lot of really dirty fuel ha been put in your truck, I doubt it is a clogged screen.
