t-bone- you beat me to it but first i would like to say i appreciate what you do for our freedom and everything you guys do for out country! and second of all that is a great buy will last you a life time!! head gasket job shouldnt be to bad just send the head out to get milled and make sure it will be a clean fit when you reassemble it, or you will risk having a leak from it again.

Second gen or later trans will require second gen engine plate and starter and probably flex plate. The "e" makes it electronic so u would need a PCM and some fancy wiring to make it work. If I were going to do such a swap I'd start with a 47rh. The "h" makes it hydraulic so Ur current PCM will still control OD and u can just use a lockup switch to control the converter or buy a universal kit from someplace like patc or even build the kit urself.
The first digit is the number of speeds (4)
The second digit represents the torque rating (7or8)
The third digit represents the orientation (r is rear wheel drive)
The fourth digit as I said is for hydraulic or electronic control.
Basically with the right parts a 47 can be turned into a 48 so could essentially have a 48rh wich would be great in a truck like urs
