Default hx40 swap?

Debating throwing a 6 blade hx40 16cm w/g turbo that i have just laying around on my non ic cummins. Turbo came off of a 7.? liter volvo engine. It doesnt have the 4 inch vband like the 8.3 cummins hx40's do...its a 8 bolt flat flange but i can work around that! Any pros or cons on doin this swap? truck will have 3200 spring and all pump mods done before hx 40 install

ive got a hx40 8 blade on my truck. i love it. i dont know much about the hx52 but if its a big honkin turbo it might be kinda hard to spool up. im not really sure though.

The 7 blade is the best one, but I don't know why. Maybe they run more efficiently, as I've noticed most all of the new turbos Holset have come out with are 7 bladed. I've heard that about the Volvo ones too, but a good turbo, (meaning little play) is a good turbo as far as I'm concerned. It's going to run better than the H1C, so you've not got much to loose.

I dont disagree KD93 since a 7 blade is prolly the best compromise between the high end flow performance of the six blade model and the superb flow of the 8 blade at lower spool speeds! I read that 7 & 8 blade models flow around 60lb/min and six bladed models flow 69lbs/min. The six blade i have was free so im not complainin, but i was curious if i was leaving a lil performance on the table at lower engine rpm considered my turbo is more about peak flow rather than mid range flow?!

I don't know where you've got things set at, but I think if you added more fuel and a dab of timing you'd spool up a bit quicker!

Thanks for the info on the differences in blade design, I didn't know that.

Yea, typically the more the blades, the better the flow down low, and of course less blades equals more peak flow. I try to study as much as possible before thowing parts on it (or in this case..turbos).. I can also tell that the hx52 flows around 88lbs/min close to the flow of the big Garrett GT42 turbo for anybody that runs these big Holsets. I love Holset turbos..get put thru alot of **** and still keep on truckin!

just be sure you tune it and not just dump lots of fuel in, i got mine where i romp on it smokes then clears to a haze until 15 psi the once the turbo lighs it clears up and this sewms to be where i have the compromise between controllable boost, decent egts and the most power, and at 32 psi pedel to the floor it has a little haze. i would do a little with the fuel pin to, either by buying one or grinding the stock one. M&H has good pins and so does dennyt. just my 2 cents

dont waste your time on one of the 6 blade hx40s from big rigs. been there done that. didnt take me long to figure out a real turbo is no comparison to one of those things at all. theyre really laggy too. i definitely dont have a fuel problem anywhere they just lag. a super hx40 is a decent turbo. but a 6 blade from the big trucks arent even worth toying with IMO
