HELP!!! What Trans??
I have a 1989 Dodge D250 5.9 with an automatic transmission.I am beginning to have trans issues...slips for just a second after initially moving when cold...slips for only about 2 seconds then sort of bangs into gear and is ok from then on....although now occasionaly will slip just a bit from second to 3rd. I plan to do a fluid and filter change as this truck has at least 160.000 miles on it and I have no idea if fluid has ever been changed. If this does not help improve the trans operation I am hoping to find a decent used unit for this old truck...it is my work truck ...very rusty but runs excellent. My question is ...what trans should this truck have in it....from what I have found so far I think it should be a 727 if so is it the same as a conventional trans out of a gas car or truck...is the torque converter the same as a gas unit? Any help would be soooo appreciated...thanks in advance Royboy

It is going to be a 727, very similar to the gas units, but the case itself is unique to the Cummins, as are the torque converter, and the valvebody programming.
When you have the pan off of it to do the service, i would recomend that you adjust both bands at the very least, and seriously consider bumping up the hydraulic pressure a couple turns. When its back together pour 6-8 oz. of brake fluid into it when you refill it, this will swell the internal seals and usually works wonders on a trans. that is starting to slip.
If you are unsure about the band/pressure adjustments, you should be able to find all of the info you need in the "1st gen sticky" thread
