smoke screw/ star wheel
i just bought a 92 w350 with a nv4500 in it, the guy i bought it from said the pump had been "turned up" im pretty positive the fuel screw hasnt been touched cuz it doesnt have that much more power than it should. but i can tell the smoke screw and star wheel have been turned but i am not sure how much. anyway my point is its rollin black smoke just for show and thats just wastin $$$ and slowin down my spool up so my question is how far can i back out the screw and starwheel without causeing damage, how far out is the torx screw when its stock, mine is flush with the lock nut. thanks for any help

Just turn them back a little bit at time Til you find a spot you like. You could take and turn the star wheel clockwise till it bottoms out then go counterclockwise 2 turns or so. That'll give you a bit more response than stock. While you have the cover for the star wheel off look real hard at the pin/cone that's in there, find the steepest side and put that one facing the front of the engine. Also if you want some more power look on YouTube for turning up a first gen. There's a bunch of videos on the subject

what is the pin/cone your talkin about, what does it do?

ok i realize now that it as the fuel pin you were talking about. the star wheel was 4 clicks from being bottomed out so i turned it back 2 full turns and turned my smoke screw back 2.5 turns and now the smoke is about were i want it. while i was in there i rotated the fuel pin 90 degrees and i have way faster spool up and throttle response and im gettin an extra 5-10 mph in each gear before its wound up pretty tight but now im curious if i have to worry about anything now that the pin is turned because i have no extra gauges or anything

The smoke screw and starwheel are not exactly real fine adjustments. In fact they are just about useless if you turn the fuel screw in at all. After that, all the way out/down is all they are good for. For example, my smoke screw is backed out enough to grind the inside out of the top cover, enabling max upward cone travel, and it will still belch plenty of black smoke given enough throttle before up on the turbo.

aproximatly how much more hp/torque does having it turned give me?

i understand the pyro but why would i need boost? and also what kinda temps/psi should i be wanting and what are bad readings?

Boost is just neat to have mostly but it lets you tune a waste gate and make it less likely you'll blow a head gasket. Around 700 degrees cruising is normal. 900 on a steep hill empty. Just north of 200 at idle. The highest temp I've ever hit on my pyro is 1400 and the most boost I've ever seen on my gauge is 42. Cruising with the stock turbo should be 5-10 psi. My s362 runs 2 psi cruising getting up to 10 keeping speed on a steep hill. Stock turbo will probably be closer to 20

Something like 60-100 extra hp. 200-300 extra lb-ft of torque
