You could have leaky injectors or excessive return fuel causing your pressure to drop

If your lp pressure is ok

At the point of pulling the motor and dropping in a new motor

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I pulled the fuel line off the lift pump and turned key to on position but no fuel came out is there supposed to be fuel flowing with the key on the on position? Plus water in the fuel my filter was dirty and water mixed in brand new filter has 30 miles on it. Very angry with 55 gallon drum goin to waste!!

The stock lift pump does not do anything unless the engine is running, its a mechanical pump thats driven off of the camshaft, so popping off the line, turning the key to on and seeing no flow does not mean the pump is bad. Still having water issues with the fuel? I`d drop the tank, dump it all and start fresh. Now, according to the symptoms your having it could be a bad lift pump, especially with 200+k on it but VE trucks are pretty forgiving in the lift pump dept meaning they`ll usually run just fine with a wasted lift pump(no psi) unless your demanding a large amount of fuel(beatin on it) this is due to the VE having its own internal vane pump to supply the rotor head assembly, in fact VE`s used in Volkswagon applications do not even use a lift pump, they rely only on the VE`s internal vane pump to move the fuel from the tank up to the injection pump.. OR the water in the fuel issue has wasted your injection pump....white/blue smoke and crappy performance are also signs of a junk IP. If your interested I have a brand new diaphragm style lift pump I`ll give you for darn near free (PM me) if you want to rule the lift pump out. And a VE truck by design cannot slip timing (unless there is severe carnage) due to the pump drive gear being keyed to the input shaft of the pump, P-pump trucks are the ones that sometimes have timing slip problems because they do not use a keyway , I highly doubt its a timing issue.

I dont know it this is it, but it sounds like my truck was, mine was the timing. When i start mine it white smokes for a little, then its a blue haze, but when warm it dont do it. Mine sputtered an backfired. i adjusted mine a little and it helps alot. im gonna adjust some more today.

I dropped the tank an started fresh with 5 gallons of fresh fuel and it runs better at idle, no where near as much smoke but still cuts out when i put it to the floor. Something weird is if i make a hard turn and floor it, it will have full power until the truck straightens out, then it will back fire and cut out again. Any way to tell if my IP is bad besides fuel pressure? Maybe a return line issue? Also after dropping the tank, the truck loses prime after i ahut it off and i have to crank it for 4 seconds about and pedal it to start warm or cold. At this point im going to do a p-pump motor swap.

anyone? any chance of a bad onjector?
