Default Timing issue

On my dads 96 2500 auto that is all stock besides exhaust and intake if you rev it while on park it starts to cut out at about 1800 to 2100 rpm and throws white smoke but before and adtwe those speeds it it just fine and runs good. Is my thinking right about it being the timing?

Could be but what does the truck do when under a load at those RPM. Whe you build boost it probably will run fine. If you want to reset the timing you can always pin the pump and motor and get it to stock timing.

I would reset the timing and start from there and see what it does. Probably needs to be advanced a little.
