If you read through the Instructions from Geno's a few times it dosn't sound to bad, the first time I read them it was kind of overwhelming but after lookin at the kit and reading through them a couple more times it dosn't sound too bad, plus with the cover off I'll be able to clean taper on the gear and shaft good so it dosn't slip on me. I'll post and let everybody know how I make out. Guess it will probly take a few days to get the kit

It won't be that bad... Biggest problem is the fear of sticking a wrench on the engine because of a case of the "what ifs." What if it doesn't run right? What if I screw up something? What if I break a part? What if? What if? What if?

Just stick a wrench on the parts and do it. Timing gear will fight you for about 3 seconds, then go "pop" and break free of the taper. If it comes off easy, it was already moving. Make sure that you reverse the rotation of the engine when you advance the timing (hold the pump gear stationary). Then, when you tighten the gear back on to the pump and rotate the engine back to TDC, the pump will be advanced by that amount.

Don't go crazy with over-torque on the pump gear. I've read some really ludicrous numbers in some forum posts -- numbers that exceed the carrying capacity of the bolt and threads. That is just asking for something broken IMHO. Just make sure that the taper and gear bore are absolutely dry. I used 90% alcohol on mine after a dose of brake cleaner, electronic cleaner, etc. Dry, that thing is almost welded, a bit of lube and it spins.

That's what I saw -- and how I torqued mine. So far, so good.

It does bear saying, however, that there is a good reason to pull the entire front cover. The KDP and all the bolts that hold the accessory drive cover to the engine are all problems that should be addressed.

Hey good to hear from you, theres several 12 valves runnin around over my way nobody I've met yet. You wouldn't know anybody who has a kit do do the timing on a P series pump would you ? I'd like to find one I could rent rather then shellin out $250 for a kit and a barring tool . I don't mind buyin tools but I still need a A/C Evaperator Core, and a Heater Core, not to mention body work. Gotta Love our Road Salt

Timing in WNY-001.jpgWell I went ahead and did the KDP yesterday, Its gonna be a month or two before I buy a timing kit so I didn't want to chance the pin coming out. I was glad to see after removing the cover that the pin was sittin snugly in place where it belongs. I couldnt see spending 100 bucks on a kit for the kdp so I bought a Fel Pro gasket and seal kit for the front cover at autozone and made my own tab. I took a piece of 1/8 aluminum flat stock I found on the bench and drilled a hole in it the size of the housing bolt. Next I found a washer that fit the bolt, laid it over the hole in the flat stock and traced it with a sharpie, then I drew a lobe of the side of the circle so it looked like a cam lobe and rough cut it out with the sawzall, next I spent a minute with the grinder shaping it up. In the end it looks and works just like the tab the parts guys are gettin $50 bucks for I'll show a pic of the tab installed if I can figure out how to upload it.
