Timing in WNY
I have a 96 12 valve only mods so far are a K&N Intake and a soon to be installed 4'' Exhaust. I'm a beginner on diesels although I've drove them for years on the job this is the first I've omned. My question is I'm getting ready to do the KDP would it be benificial to bump up the timing at this point ? I want to get a fuel plate and guages eventually and probably a few more mods but it's one step at a time. I tow a 5000 lbs camper a few times a summer if that makes a difference. The other thing is, Is there anybody out there in Western/Central NY with the equipment, and know how to help me with it, if it's a good Idea? I'm about 45 minutes south of Rochester and I'm more than willing to pay somebody for thier time. Thanks in advance for any advice

It wouldnt hurt to bump it up you might as well, its pretty easy to do yourself you can buy a timing kit on ebay for not that much thats what where I got mine and it works just fine. I wouldnt go much beyond about 17* though with out having head studs because as you increase timing, you increase cylinder pressure also.

Check out Gambino Brothers diesel in Springville NY. VERY VERY cool guy(s) and very knowledgeable. He will time you to whatever you want it for 150$.]
Is your truck auto or 5spd? If its a 5spd you have an excellent beginning mods list. Exhaust, intake, fuel plate, and afc tuning will have that truck hauling ***. Some sticks will have it really ripping. If thats an auto I highly advise doing the auto trans before you do anything more than the intake and exhaust.

You do have to pull the gear, but it can come out of the hole in the cover. But as long as the cover is off, do the timing! I set mine to 16*. Runs really crisp now. Starts almost instantly (I mean instantly, hardly get the key turned most days.) and revs free.
If you have the skills to get the front cover off, you can also do the timing. Either invest in the tools to do it right (eBay is okay, also Snap On, etc.), or use the pointer on the balancer trick -- about 3/8" movement on the balancer is right for 16* timing. I've since bought the tools, but I did mine the balancer way and it worked great. You may want to read the article on Geno's about setting timing back to stock first, just to make sure you are starting in the right place -- they are notorious for slipping.
