Default Problem starting

got a 97 cummins in my truck been having a bit of trouble with starting it in the morning. It will crank for a few seconds then the starter will kick out and freespin then try to go back in. Ussualy it would start within the couple of seconds of cranking but after it drops below 5 degrees it doesnt like starting without the coulple extra seconds. The starter is just a few months old and the batteries were checked on my voltameter and they were fine. When i get back to my portable jumper im going to try and jump the starter directly. Any ideas if this is a voltage problem or is there somethin worse goin on here?

maybe the flywheel or torque converts teeth are chipped? so it freespins but then catches? i dunno that all i can think of. i would plug the truck in or kick up the idel for the cold winter but its almost over now so you should't have to worrie till next winter haha

only thing i could think of is the teeth are missing or its not bolted on tight, my chevy 350 does the same thing all year long no matter if its new or old
