Are there any serious issues I should be looking for signs of when buying a high mileage 12v Cummins engine? The plan is to buy a used engine (or more likely, a complete donor truck) and rebuild it before installing it in a pickup.

Mods .. what has been done, Fluids, basic maintenance .. just know the transmissions are an issue, but with a some mods they work real good, and are reliable as you can get

If you're going to rebuild it anyway, the first thing you should do is pull the timing cover and see if the killer dowel pin has been tabbed.
