84 diesel rabbit 5 spd shifter problem

I have a 84 diesel rabbit with a 5spd and today i went to go into the reverse and the shifter fell straight down and now it is a pain in the butt to get into any gear. what might have happend?

the shifter sits on mounts, move your heat shields underneath and see if they broke off, theyre only rubber mated to steel, and after this many years probably rusted
