Drive it like you stole it is the only way to truely enough these little cars. The mileage does not change, in fact can get better if you begin to understand the RPM.

Most I have ever squeaked out of my 55L tank is 1230km but on average it is 970 to 1070km in town, on the hwy or whatever. They are great that way.

Whatever you do don't idle for long periods - plugs the EGR. The only other thing that is manditory (you can think me latter) is getting an aluminum skid plate. These cars are so low to the ground (stock) that any pot hole, debris, speed bump or whatever can punch a hole into and through the plastic one and the oil sump - instantly you will have a $10K + paperweight.

If you notice most complaints are about the Jetta and Bug! They come out of Mexico and from 98-05.4, those are the problem cars! Now, The 05.5+ Jettas and Bugs that come out of Mexico seem to be better then ones coming out of Germany! When I went to school to learn about the new Jetta there was a 1/2
video apologizing for all the problems from Germany. Germany stepped in and took over the plant and started running it.
After working for VW dealer for a few years (best job of my life) I was the same way i could diagnose just about any problem over the phone. The other problem with VW is they change the veh every 4-5 year and they dont just change 1 or 2 things they change the entire veh including the technoligy. So after 4 years of working out the bugs and getting the old car 100% they up and change it and have to start all over again..hehe.. But they still make one hell of a veh

ya the alum skid plate was a great product. I was one of the few dealers in canada when evolution first came out with them. I couldent keep them in stock fast enough. Only down fall to them when your a VW shop is you loose all teh extra bizz from people punching holes in their oil pan's we used to do 1-2 a week... But it was worth it a little customer service like that went a long way. And at the time it was cheeper to put the alum on then it was to put the factory plastic crap back on..

I was thinking about a VW Jetta diesel for my next car when I graduate. What year do you like the best? and what kind of mileage do you see out of these like endurance wise? I have been looking at some on fleabay and they are up in the 100+k miles and I dont want to buy something thats just going to eat it after I buy it.

I've read that with regular maintenance, the motor is good for 300k miles, easy. I bought my 06 with 43k a year ago Sept, has 66k now, and I absolutely love it.

My sister has an 02 tdi with the auto trans. When you start it and put it in drive it will not rev over 2k until you either drop it in first and rev it or put it in neutral and rev it. Then it seems to run fine but, I think its a little low on power. Can't seem to get any codes off of it with my scanner other than some emissions code. Been looking at getting Vag Com. Is it hard to use? It seem really reasonably priced or is there a license fee to use it on more than one vehicle as my wife has an 03?

could be the intake is full of carbon deposits or the turbo blades are getting sticky.

well a good way to blow off the carbon on the turbo blades is just to drive it like you stole it for a couple days. intake cleaning would be just taking off the intake getting some brake cleaner and with a toothbrush getting out all the carbon deposits, im not sure this is your problem. just shooting in the dark. vag com would be a good investment if she figures on keeping her car for a decent time or plans on getting a future tdi.
