Best way I found to get the class A was a tow co. that gave driving classes. One day deal in Mo. They have single axle air brake trucks with automatics. Did the walk around until you had it down then did driving. Took you to the dot with the truck you know will pass inspection. In at five in the morning and out with a license at noon.
I did it this way as I knew my trucks probably wouldn't pass the strict rules. 400 was the cost at the place I did it. Good luck.

I have a 01, 7.3, 3/4 ton truck. Also have a dove tail trailer, making a total of 30 feet. I do haul 30 and 32 foot loads. Duel axle, with single tires. Trailer gross is 15,000 lbs. Class A CDL, with HazMat. From La. I have runs to Ca. ND, WV, Ok, Tx, Co, Canada. Nevar been stopped. The only reason I don't get A bigger(weight) trailer is that they always want to over load the truck gross weights. As for a making a living, I have done 175,000 in a year. Fuel was a over 25,000. Hook up with a good national company. With ACME, lots of runs. Their cut is 30%. With all the money they take, I made about 53%(net). Then fuel comes out. LTI was the best. Their cut is 25%. Cheaper insurance. I'm with ELFS now. Plenty runs. Good prices. The important thing Is back hauls. I get a lot ot b/h's. Thats where you make the money. No m/t trailer. Truck has 430,000 on it. 6 speed manual. You can make a living, but try to get your own customers. You can make an extra 5% on Your runs. P.S. get a passport. Need for canada trips. Good luck!

I did hot shot for over a yr. put almost 100K on the truck and did a lot of dead heading because I did not want to wait for days.
I'd stay in the Army or switch over to another branch of the military if I had people to support. It's a steady income.
With Hot Shot you'll wear out your truck and not have anything to show for it.

Yes, as long as your GCWR of the truck and trailer exceeds 26,000 LBS. This is for Texas, I did my CDL Class A test with my truck and trailer.

One ton DRW minimum. I have yet to see anyone hauling in the oil field with a SRW. Most of all it's not SAFE at all, with a SRW most of the time you will be over your rear axle and tires rating.

Maybe you guys are aspiring too greatly. I'm starting with a 3/4-ton diesel Chev, borrowing a 16-foot 3-axle GN as needed, staying under 10k / 26k, truck is totally paid off, annual replacement of engine & trans at $500 ( yes, used , that's why annual ) Able to make minimum wage, but the truck costs come out of my wages, same as maintaining a car for an office job. The challenge is finding enough jobs to stay in the truck 40 hrs / wk. so that it does equal minimum wage. No family to support. Just trying to build up a good reputation.

You can do it with a single wheel if you get beefed up wheel and tires. I wouldn't risk it on the stock load E rated ones. If you can pull your bed off just get 1/4 fenders, mud flaps, spacers and dually wheels or a rear axle from a dually if you don't want too buy a new truck. It is much safer with a dually though. I wouldn't do it again with a single wheel.

There is plenty of work too. I was rarely empty hauling cars. You want to sign up for centraldispatch.com after you get your DOT/MC number.
