You have to go through your local Secretary Of State to find out the procedures for your state. I will tell you that they go off the Manufacturer tag no matter what you do to the truck until you go through their process. Here in Illinois they make it almost impossible, you can do it but it better be worth your while.

would dodge do the right thing if i put 4500 runing gear on my truck. i know its a pain. but it will be a hell of a lot cheaper then having go buy one it looks like around $6500-7500 for eveything. i there is always 19.5 wheels and 4500 door tags. but if they open the door and look well you know

Nobody but the Secretary Of States Office can do this for you. It all works off your VIN/Registration Number and that's how your model of truck is registered with the Federal DOT and been approved by them. The dealers couldn't do it even if they were willing.
When I checked into this some years ago, here in Illinois I could license the truck as a tractor with a federal and state DOT# for up to 38,000 pounds with the right modifications and certifications. The one that stopped me cold in my tracks was that the bed had to be totally disabled from the ability to haul. Behind the cab had to be usable space for nothing but towing a trailer like the semi's. In my case I still needed a bed a some sort for haulin farm stuff. It's based around making the truck good for nothing except over the road hauling.

Don't assume these guy's don't know they're job. The first safety check point you go through is gonna cost you everything your gonna make for the next 20 years. They don't play with this kinda stuff. Fines in the tens of thousands are common place for overloaded and safety violations. I hate to know what fraud or misleading practices would get you for endangering public safety.

That right there is the ONE!!!
It can be like playing 'roulette'. You may be able to get away with it for a while, but if something bad were to ever happen, you may not be able to recover from it financially! A guy is better off doing it right the first time by a long shot!
Every once in a while you see something that makes you just shudder! We were on the freeway last year and were over taking a mobile home fairly fast. It wasn't going over 45 mph. When I got over to pass it, it got over also and I had to brake hard. Then it went back in it's lane. I thought I could pass and added some fuel to the fire. Over into the inside lane it came again. I fell back a ways and 'timed' my passing. I usually don't call in very much at all. I called this one in. This was about a 50' mobile home being towed by a short bed reg cab Ford gasser. I don't remember now if it was a 1/2 or a 3/4 ton. He had so much tongue weight that he almost didn't have his steer axle on the ground! On the next overpass was a local city officer watching through binoculars. He might have been able to verify what I reported
