hauling scrap metal
I posted on craigslist that I was looking for 3pt attachments that might need a little work or work and said i would haul scrap metal away in trade. well next thing I know I got 3 calls to move scrap metal.
So I was wondering if i did this on a regular basis would I need any extra insurances or anything?
I will only be doin maybe 2-3 loads a month.
thx

You may want to check prices on scrap metal if you haven't lately. Prices crashed here a month or so ago. Hard to get anybody to haul it away anymore. We got one scrap yard here in town that won't even take steel anymore, says he can't find anyplace to send it to.
Legally speaking your gonna need commercial insurance to do this. If you except anything with a monetary value including goods or services in exchange for the services of your vehicle it is technically speaking a commercial enterprise.
But now on the real side of life. If your just doin a few loads here and there if you ever have a problem you just be sure all parties concerned know you were just cleaning your shop or garage out and all this scrap is from hobby materials.

Our local scrap yards in Pa are takin anything you can haul in. Anything you tow is automaticaly covered under your tow vehicles insurance. At least thats what my insurance agent told me.
i hear that, our scrap yards will take anything they can get right now. might not pay worth a damn, but they will take it!!! i wouldn't worry about insurance, just go with the cleaning out garage thing, and hope they don't know you, like a crazy ex or something like that.
What I was told when I used to drive Semis was that if you personally own the material being hauled, it is not a commercial freight thing. However, if you are going to do this, watch out you can still be nailed for over weight, and over axle. If you are hauling the metal off for pay, then it is a commercial freighting application, and you would need a DOT number, and commercial tags, insurance, and the like. Try to aviod all that stuff, it is a royal pain! It has been a while, so check out the FMCSA.gov website for the skinny on what you can do.
i just got stopped last month by DOT. he told me to go to the web sight becuse they have chaged the laws alot. sure enought now anyone making a living with a truck that is 10k or over needs DOT #s even if you us a pickup with a trailer and your 10k or over then you need dot#s. just another way for them to suck some more cash out us.

yeah me and my bro where haulin a load every other day here in az over 1000 bucks each load did it while japan was building the damn thats why it was such good money well thats at least where they were sending it. a lil over 16000 in a two months not bad
