I have been running BFG 35's on my 1990 ford since I got the truck in 91. The problem is that they don't make them anymore to fit a 16.5 rim. I thought about getting newer ford rims but the lug pattern is not the same that would fit either 17's or 16's. Has anybody set up their older ford truck with newer stock rims.

 

That year Ford had an 8X6.5 bolt pattern, it is inter-changeable with Dodge and Chevy trucks. The 16X10 Weld wheels on my 87 GMC with 1 ton running gear would fit on your Ford. The '99 and up Super Duty uses the 8X170 metric pattern. Anyway, you can run either a 16X10 with a 315/75 or a 17X10 with a 315/70 (35s) on any 8X6.5 on your truck.

 

I called 2 different tire shops and both told me do not put anything but 16.5 tires on the rims. Do I need to find rims first?

 

No never do that and they make bfg a/t's in 16.5 yet as well as there are more vendors that make 16.5's but they are becoming more rare.

 

Yes thats true, But the cost of these tires are getting really high! I was told by a tire salesman(i know) that for the price of 2 16.5 BFG's that I could get 4 17's of the same 35 size range. So That brings me back to the question of rims.

 

You must mount 16 inch tires on a 16 inch wheel and so on. If I am getting your point correctly, you wanted to know if you could run 16 or 17 inch WHEELS on that truck. If that is the case, I don't see why not. If 16s clear the front rotors on the Dana 60 on my 87 GMC, they should clear your front rotors also.

However, unless you're a tweaker with a round file and nothing to do in the middle of the night, 99-04 8X170mm wheels are NOT for your truck.

Sorry, that should have been '99 and up, I must have been thinking about my old Mustang when I wrote that 99-04 thing.

 

you could go on ebay and type in humvee tires, we ran 37s with a 16.5 in rim , and for what you would spend on dif rims you could get a leveling or lift kit prolly
