A lower receiver from Nodak Spud is $75 + $15 shipping - That has to go to your local FFL... (They should want no more then $20 to do the transfer paper work, If they want more go somewhere else... Everything else you can have shipped right to your door) the RM16A2 is teh one you want, black, http://www.nodakspud.com/newstuff.htm

Then get yourself a Lower parts kit, I like Stag arms but for teh most part a parts kit is a parts kit... Around $65

Next your gonna need a stock, The Magpul MOE stocks are a god value, you need a buffer spring and tube with them also... prices on stock vary but you can get a decent set up for $50-$100.

JSE complete upper... I have a few of these... 16" BD 1x9 5.56 Chrome Moly GB Carbine Upper They work great and they are only $375...

Then get some sort of sight or optic. The Millet DMS-1 is a GREAT budget all around scope. Lots of very happy users. Millett Tactical DMS Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 1-4x 24mm Illuminated Circle Dot Reticle Matte - MidwayUSA

Just what I would do if building my first AR... The only work you will have to do is install the lower parts kit and stock... 20min tops for first timer... I used this write up to assemble mine....

How to build an AR M-16 "type" weapon - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board

You can build a real nice AR with optic and with some mags for $800ish easy...

The internet...

All depends....no one place is best and has best pieces parts, you need to look around & research pieces parts...

and what you expect from a AR, why build a CQB carbine when ya want a 600yard tack driver....

Yuck.....had one, sold it...it's not bad for a cheap safe queen, but it's not a high quality scope by any means...

1x4 was under powered at the high end for me...been looking at the new 1x8 scopes, they are the ****...

But if ya want a 1x4, go with the short dot

Never said it was high dollar, its probably got the best bang for the buck out there right though. Nothing else at the $200 price point will stand next to it IMO

Ugh, don't remember the name...need to dig out the cataloug I got at Shot Show this year...a much much better scope than the DMS-1....better built, better glass & have much higher reviews...but like a tool I can't remember the name...

Quality optics and accessories from Leupold, Bushnell, Burris, Nikon and more! has tons of optics and a form devoted to said optics that's not bad...

Thanks for the response guys. I'm Looking to build something like a cqb carbine . Im looking at maybe a small magnification red dot (most shoots will be 100-150yds or less). The optic and ar both need to be able to stand up to abuse so any tips to make it stronger are gladly welcome

One last one....if you have never looked at LaRue...well then get off the camel & take a good hard look at them...

LaRue Tactical

The PredatAR is unreal, the 7.62 version is well supercalafraglistic to say the least...it's so light and easy to get on target you would never believe it's a 7.62....

I've got a LaRue Stealth....mummmmmmmm

Looks like LaRue built AR's also made the latest transformer movie...not to mention the Governor of Texas likes & shoots em....
