Default Trying to decide which Cummins generation to get.

In my few years driving and in the automotive world, I have owned two vehicles and I am soon to be in need of another truck. Now, I have been trying to decide between just some old Chevrolet/GMC beater truck or a Cummins. I have done quite a bit of research into trucks, especially diesel. I want several opinions on this.
My needs are to haul trailers(cars, metal, etc.), the occasional horse trailer or boat, and occasionally a 5000 lb camper trailer.
I haven't yet learned to drive manual although I intend on learning soon. So automatic is preferred. I doubt a non-Duramax Chevy/GMC will hold up with that camper(we have tried) and I don't want a Duramax. If I get a diesel I want a Cummins out of price, reliability and just the shear reputation of being easy to work on, and cheaper. I have a few diesel mechanics at my disposal for knowledge.
The only thing I need help on is deciding which generation Cummins to buy? I love the simplicity of the 1st generations, but I love the tune-ability of the 2003-2007 5.9. I don't think that I will ever tune it all the way up to anything more than 500 hp.(for now) But is the 235 hp of the first gen. enough?
I appreciate all non-Ford advice. Thanks!

Glad to hear from a Cummins man!!! I would probably get a 2nd gen for your use. You don't have to, but I would go with a manny tranny for all the towing you speak of. A manual will be FAAAAAAAAAAR more reliable when towing and in power mods. A 12 valve can break 235 in a snap of a finger with less than 500 bucks. Before you do anything to it, kill the KDP, or you can kill your engine. Before you do anything to mod ANY dodge diesel is get ya a set of gauges. I pwould reccomend getting Pyro, Boost, Fuel Pressure, EGT, and Trans. Temp. Then ya get ya a 4k gov kit, 60 lb valve springs, fuel pin, grind the fuel plate, BHAF, straight piped exhaust, Bump the timing, turn the barrels, boost elbow, and take out that silencer ring!! You should go beyond your 235hp goal with just that! Do al these you will get the rubber in 2nd!! Bring it on CORVETTES!!!

Thanks! That is a great collection of knowledge on one page. Saved me all the research time. What is the difference in the first gen 12v and the second gen 12v other than the body. (i find the first gen body drop dead gorgeous in almost amy condition.)

Well unless the truck has been converted to a p pump a 1st gen has no fuel plate. Look in the sticky on tuning your VE Pump and read up to learn how everything works. Make sure you get some gauges before you go playing with it too much. Anyways with the ve pump the best and cheapest mods are a 3200 gov spring, upgraded fuel pin (Denny T) or turn your stock one, timing bump 1/8" and some turns on your fuel screw. Then tune your afc with the starwheel.

here is a link to athread with a few mods on video for 1st gen https://www.dieselbombers.com/1st-ge...-upgrades.html

So, the p pump was clearly better, but is it hard to do the conversion? Ill find a tutorial, but a general heads up will be much appreciated.
