Hey all,

Fair warning: Wall of text.

I've got a 2002 GMC 1500 2wd ECLB with the 5.3, auto. But, it's only 2wd, and only a half-ton, so I'm looking to upgrade .

I won't be getting any money out of this truck, and I can't use it as a trade-in (shitty story...I'll share if anybody wants to hear), so I'm trying to find a 3/4-1ton diesel that I can grab for cheap. It must be at least an extended cab (gotta haul the girlfriends kids sometimes), 4x4 (Northwest Missouri winters) and I greatly prefer a long bed, but I can get by with a short box (gives me a reason to buy a good trailer sooner).

I found a 1995 Chevy K2500. 222,xxx miles, auto, 6.5TD for $4000. Paint isn't the best, and the cloth interior is dirty/stained, but intact. Looks to be pretty straight, and I don't really care how not-pretty the truck looks, since I'll actually put it to work and dirty it up anyways.

I haven't seen it in person yet, since it's ~200 miles away, but I was just wondering if it would be worth the drive to check it out. I'm not new to the diesel world (~350,000 miles in the Army), but this would be the first diesel I'd own, and have to work on myself.

Opinions? I'll post a link to the truck if anybody wants. And I'm open to suggestions. I was a die-hard Chevy boy for a long time, but I'm coming to realize that theres other reliable options, and maybe my brand loyalty was a bit blind, .

Thanks in advance

You will hear mixed reviews on the 6.5 here. Some of them are true some are not so true. I have had good luck with them and have put over 300k miles on all of them I have owned. You should be somewhat familiar with them every Humvee runs ether a 6.2 or a 6.5 just like in the Chevy trucks. The only thing is I think the price is high for a well used 95. I gave $2000 for my 94. If you could get it for somewhere around that it might be worth it.
