I am helping a relative go about a plow truck. This is maine and I have plowed..learned quickly to dislike everything less than 8 lugs. I vowed no gas 6 lug 3/4 tons fairy taling their way into my dads driveway.

he is headed for retirement age yrs old, no bs'er.. 30 year trucker.. this needs a good search for a real truck. I am hoping for a no b/s truck like the last one he owned in 1972. He skipped right over the last 30 years of truck owning hell...by not even owning one.

I am limited on choices, seems rural even in a city when it comes to trucks that need to work. he wants local, less than 3k, and I found a candidate.

I spotted a gmc, 8 foot bed, extended cab, and the 8 lugs from at least a .25 mile gander away. Took one look and knew it was a strong one (My brother broke his gas 3/4 ton frame.. looked like hell from a mile away).. what 1998 chevy doesn't bust a cab mount being a plow truck. I not only found one, it had racked up 227k miles..I then spotted 2500 labels and 1 ton springs in the same truck.. knew it had been modded to be serious. As it turns out, it was, just for the sand box that used to go in the back. Interior is black leather, nice console...

went back for a second look, started right up, today was snow. lively startup, shook the truck. It has been modified with 1 ton springs in the back. Got some life in it I could guess, before taking a ride. owner replaced one balljoint, needs nothing. it has a "boss" sticker n the front of the frame for the plow.

my question for gurus is what preventives would be a great idea if to purchase?

I spotted the oil filter from the drivers side wheel well, and thought immediately of the professional products billet line of stuff... and that is about all I could think of right away.

Any advice for this diesel plow truck seriously needing to be northern maine strong?

I havent had much personal experience with 6.5's.

From what I understand, they aren't the most powerful in the world, but I believe they are pretty reliable.

 

realiable as ***** good mpg make sure the pmd has been relocated if it hasnt do it, couple bucks and an hour of ur time...other than thatgo for it

 

it wouldn't be a bad plow rig. The 6.5 has some reliablity problems, but the good thing is if these parts fail, its not catastrophic. If he's keeping it stock, you can figure at most $600 worth the parts to make it run another 100k ruling out random catastrophic failure.
The only thing besides the PMD on a truck with that many miles would be to do injectors, as they are designed for ~100k mile life. They don't break the bank, and that truck is cheap and isn't going to give you any more problems than another truck the same year with same miles.
