Default Ball Joints For A 96 F350

I just had my truck in the shop for two new front tires and an alignment. When I picked it up they had replaced the Outer Tie Rod and the Connecting Rod to the Pitman Arm.
All this cost me $1300. I wasn't happy but after I drove it, I didn't feel so bad. The truck is manegable now.

Now the shop says I should replace the upper and lower ball joints. They want $500 for parts and $750 for labor. Another $1300 I'll need to sink into the front end.

If the shop does all they suggest, I would be paying them over $3100.00

How hard is it to replace ball joints on a 4x4? I really don't want to pay these guys $125.00 an hour for labor. I need to trim the fat somewhere. Are the ball joints do-able for a first timer?
