If you find one that is in good shape, has been well cared for and is priced right. I'd say go for it. You're not going to get great big power numbers out of it without spending a small fortune, but they can still make decent power with a few mods, and overall are pretty reliable trucks. I'm sure somebody else will chime in too.

You're thinking along the right lines there. A TS Performance chip would be a good start along with a good flowing intake and exhaust. With an older truck like that, be prepared to replace nickel and dime stuff as well... like shocks, suspension bushings, etc. The good thing about that though, is it's an easy afternoon/weekend project that you don't need a shop full of special tools for. The money you save doing stuff yourself means more money for the things you want to do later.
