My truck will take 4-5 cranks to start if I leave it unplugged over night a white smoke like a s.o.b, but If I plug it in it starts fine first try and it was Dow to 20 last night here in Ohio, does this mean only a few of my gp's are bad?

not exactly. it just means it's cold. how long does it smoke white for?

 

Like say I'm at work a steel mill like tonight it's probably close to twenty I'll go out and start it while I'm waiting to clock out and it may take 2-3 cranks, and will only smoke for a second or two not long.sometimes it will start first try just depends how cold it is and how warm the motor was when I parked it for an 8 hour shift.

thats normal, if anything they might be getting a little weak. your fine dont worry

 

i'd check the glow plug relay with a test light when its cold out to make sure the glow plugs are getting signal then go from there.

 

Ok.and how would I go about checking that? Should I do it when it's not been plugged in?

if his relay was bad, the truck probably wouldnt start with it being that cold......

WHAT YOUR TRUCK IS DOING IS NORMAL.

can i just ask how many miles are on the truck?

its glow plugs if anything.

your saying the truck starts better when plugged in? good your block heater is working perfectly.

if you really feel the need to check it, us a multimeter. your relay is located on the passenger side of the engine, its tan/brown 4 prong lookin thing (relay). with the key on, engine off or running (doesnt matter if your block heater is plugged in as well), you should see 12Volts constant on one side and 12Volts switched on the other side of the relay. 8volts on the two smaller studs, switched by the glow plug controller. they stay on anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes.

like i said before, what your truck is doing is normal, if anything its WEAK GLOWPLUGS

 

Ok.it gas almost 172000 on it, I forgot one of the owners wrote all maintenance records I manual so I'll look there and see if any of those things were replaced ever.

It's 19 degrees out, went o start my truck and it took about 5-6 turns of the key to get it to fire and it smoked for about 10 seconds maybe still ok?

yeah you're fine. the glow plugs might not even come on if it's plugged in. but i wouldn't worry about it.
