I had the same problem with mine. It would take awhile to crank, and than the white smoke. I changed all the GP's. GP's are working. Batteries went out. New batteries. Alt went out. New alt. Still the same. Changed the starter. That was the problem. It was turning too slow. It was 30 degrees the other a.m. WTS went off. Cranked right up. No smoke. 40 degrees this a.m. Didn't wait for the WTS to go off. Cranked right up. The new starter spins the 7.3 very FAST. 460,000 miles and still pulling hard. Maybe get the starter checked.

yes your fine, if anything just change the glow plugs out if you wanna spend the $80 on new ones. it'll live. im here in ohio too, in Lima, i've been seeing the same weather you have, i got a couple gp's bad. talk about skipping and smokin hard, mine will white out the neighborhood until some heat finally gets in the cylinders!

and thats another good point ^

having weak batteries or starters will also greatly effect how these things start in the cold (like any car or truck). the faster you can get the motor up to speed, the less effort the motor's gonna have to put into doing it itself (less fuel=less smoke).

im gonna say with the amount of miles you have, chances are the glow plugs havent been replaced, they're probably due.

oh so you havent had it a winter yet?

haha no this is completely normal, bad/weak glow plugs cause this all the time. mine will crank 5-6 times before it fires and smoke like a bastard for like, a minute until it gets some heat going.

i'd say your looking at glow plugs.

truck is a 99' right? ill tell you how to test them
