Of the 5 diesel trucks I've owned since '99, NONE of them have ever had black oil at changing time. One Cummins and four Powerstrokes.

dang, what kind of oil you guys run that doesnt turn black? i was using rotalla and it got black after a couple thousand miles, and now i switched over to cenpeco to compare some oil samples and it got black just as fast i think. when i drove big truck, it seemed like the oil got black in couple days.

The Excursion stays clean until about 3k...

Mine is Black as coal in about 300 miles.

but lots of blowby and low compression will do that.

It's about time to change the oil on the 2000. I have about 4500 miles on it (I've already beaten myself up about being 1500 over my personal limit) since I drove it across the country with 2000 miles on it beforehand.

It's down about 1/4" and it's still not black.

For comparison, here's some 1000 mile oil out of a 153K mile LB7 Duramax with a couple badly leaking injectors:

Here is the 240K 1995 with 2100 miles on the oil....

A close family friend suggested that maybe the oil I am using just didn't have enough detergent in it.

Hmm.

Valve covers/rockers, etc. were spotless. No sludge, no black ANYTHING. I'd say that the Premium Blue has been doing it's job just fine.
