Sounds like a cool project to me. 6-8 k sounds like alot until you compare that to the price of a new truck. Cummins is very reliable and long lasting. Of course the amount you decide to spend depends on what you are going to be doing with it. Totally worth it if you ask me and this would be a great way to personalize YOUR truck.
Ford + Cummins = 1 bad mammer jammer!!!

A properly done 5.9 CR swap complete is about 15k... You can cheap out on things here and there and get it done for less, but done right, turn key...

$15k.

15k?!! Ouch. That's the point where I sell my 7.3 and buy low mileage Dodge 3500.

Sure, but then you get the crappy dodge wrapping. The ONLY thing good about a dodge, is the motor...

The ONLY thing not good about a FORD... Is the motor. And even that is debatable.

all depends on what you pick the engine up for. And if you can use the tranny on the back of it or not.

If you do everthing yourself, you're still around the 10K mark if you get a good deal on the engine.

a CR will be more expensive and time consuming due to all the electronics involved

This hurts guys. Did mine completely for $3200, and after selling back my old engine and tranny, and the donor truck Dana 80, about $2200. No, its not a professional job, there's so some stuff rigged on it, but dangit it works and its a solid, reliable setup.

I do have to admit, on a newer auto truck, its gonna be more expensive after you add in adapter plates and tranny controllers. But get a 12v, throw an NV4500 behind it, and you eliminate all that extra cost. Just depends on what route you go.

Find a 94-98 donor truck with a standard tranny, and cost wise you're looking at the donor truck, driveshaft mods, motor mounts, and misc other parts (water temp/oil pressure gauge adapters, tach hookup mods, etc.). Play your cards right, search around for good deals, and I see no reason why you couldn't do it for under $5k MAX as long as you didnt mind having a handshaker.

yea i thought about the same conversion for my 96, but the conversion kit and cummins engine will cost as much as a mild built 7.3 in my case, so you wouldnt save any money, all depends on what you want to do with the truck. EasternAggie is right though, if you do the work yourself you will save a ton of money.
