Default Brake controler

I have a F350 and have been pulling a trailer forever with no trailer brake issues. Last week the trailer brakes quite working suddenly then started working again within a few miles. Then, they quite altogather. I checked all the fuses and looked for a short. All fueses were good and didn't find a short. I assumed the Hayes brake controler went out. Changed the brake controler and still do not have trailer brakes. Have looked through the owners manual and can not find any help. Is there hidden fusable links or something that Ford didn't put in the manual. Does anyone have a suggestion--------not fun without brakes---------

is it on a gooseneck? the same happened to me and it was the splice that split from the bumper pull breaks to the gooseneck breaks. i just replaced the splice and all was good.
