Default 1999 F250 7.3 PS hard to start and will only run for a minute before dieing.

First of all I'd like to say hello to everybody! I have a 1999 F250 7.3L PS Diesel crew cab short bed with 255K on it. This is my first diesel and has given me no trouble until now. The engine takes longer to start than it ever has before, but will eventually crank right up. However after running for a minute or two at the most it will die and will not restart. The only thing I have replaced are the batteries which tested bad and the fuel filter. I have no idea where to start. The engine once started, runs and sounds like normal. It just will not stay running. The truck is completely stock as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I have checked a few things I read on prior posts. The tachometer does not move while cranking the engine. There is fuel getting to the fuel bowl. I have drained it several times and then tried to crank the engine. It still doesn't start but the fuel bowl is refilling everytime. So I have no idea what this means but I'm sure there are some knowledgeable people on here who can point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

If the tach doesnt move when cranking I am 99% sure thats means your CPS (camshaft position sensor) is bad. I Dont know how much they run I know it is not much

^^^ What he said. No question about it... Try to find an international dealer, and see if they can get you two gray ones. Install one, keep the other in the glove box.

From an auto parts store, they ain't expensive at all. But if I bought the one in the link, I'd probably keep two extra in the glove box .

Thanks for the info. guys! I will see about getting a new cps in the morning. Is it a fairly easy thing to replace? How do I locate the existing one? How do I go about replacing it? Any tips you can give me are more than appreciated! I need to get this truck back on the road. Thanks again.

you get to it from underneith... as your looking up, its on the right side of the dampner... pop the electrical connection loose, loosen the 10mm bolt and gently wiggle it out... it has on oring that seals it so make sure and put some oil or some sort of lube on the new oring.... heres a pic of where its at:

nice pic ^

you can either get the grey sensor from ford which is like 36 bucks, or go to an international dealer and get a cps for a DT466, i've heard these work the best but retard your timing a couple degrees. its blue
