Bomb Trans Upgrade

I am not having a problem with my transmission now, but I have been thinking about whether or not a later transmission will work in my truck. I remember hearing that later PSDs got an extra gear in their transmission. So my quesiton is has anyone put a later transmission behind a 7.3 PSD?

The only tranny that will fit your truck is a 4R100, other wise you need a stand alone controler for a 5r110. But the 5r is no stronger then the 4r when the 4r is built up. Just build your 4R100 and you will be fine.

I would try to contact Brians Truck Shop in Lead Hill Ar with this question. He is a whiz with Ford tranny's and could make a good recommendation for any upgrades that can be done.I'm not trying to sell you anything but I have had personal dealings with him and got mine built here when I was visiting inlaws in Branson Mo and can't help but praise his work.I don't know how to post a link but you can search his website with the name I gave.

My goal wtih the trans swap was to get an extra gear to help improve mileage. It looks like even if this were possible the 4r100 is a better trans than the 5r110. That does not surprise me and I can get a gear reduction unit from gearvendors to do the same thing and may also give me a better deal on fuel economy...

Thanks for the inputs... always welcome.

The 4r and the 5r are equal in most respects... Infact the 5r will hold up to more HP then the 4r will... but the cost of a swap and electronics to run it make it less then cost effective.

Well, what I am hearing is that I should stick with the 4R100 and look to something else like a gear reduction system from Gear Vendors to improve my gear ratio.

What experience do people on this site have with the Gear Vendors product? Did you do the install yourself? If you paid someone for installation, what charge did you have to pay?

Default trans

The 4R with new upgraded internals is a stout trans. In terms of the gear vendors they are truley awesome units. Problem is there so expensive. Takes a long time to recover the cost even at todays prices. Unless your a hot shot hauler or something. But they are sweet.
