Default EBPV as an exhaust brake???

I have a 97 f350 psd, i've been hearing alot about wiring in a switch to manually open and close the ebpv to use as an exhaust brake. anyone know more about this??

I had one on my old psd and it worked and sounded pretty good. I just spliced into the wires going to the pedestal and mounted a switch on the shifter. It only took me 30 minutes to do.

Here's a copy of the instructions that I used to make mine.

Turning your Exhaust Back Pressure Valve into an Exhaust brake!!!

Locate the 2 wires that plug into the EBPV and unplug them from the pedestal

Cut the gray w/ red wire a couple inches back from the plug

Connect a wire from the gray w/ red wire from the plug and run into the cab

once inside the cab put in a lighted toggle switch and connect 12v (Switched power) to it

this is so when you turn on the toggle switch it will send 12v (Switched Power) to the EBPV and close it

I like having it this way so that you have complete control over the EBPV so you can close it to warm up the truck or for an exhaust brake

I also recommend you doing the TC lockup mod to because you would want them both on for the engine braking to work in your lower gears (Automatic only)

***This modification is not intended to be used under 30mph or 1500 rpm.***

***If you have an automatic transmission you will need to do the torque Converter Lock up Modification!! (Manual transmission are good to go)***

***Use caution it only takes 72psi of back pressure to lift a Powerstroke factory exhaust valve off of its seat and into the upcoming piston in other words do not push the skinny pedal when operating the exhaust brake***

Works great! Ran it for years on my 95, 97, 99 and my 01 when I had the valve.

Make sure you do not hook up the PCM side of that wire to 12v or you will cook the PCM.

ok and this is the stock ebpv on the factory garrett turbo right?

White93 thanks for the instructions. but hooking 12v to the wire that comes from the pcm wont do damage?
and the 75psi of backpressure, is it something i need to worry about considering i have a home made intake and dp tuner? (3" mbrp downpipe coming soon) the tuner has a high idle tune (1100rpm) for the purpose to help warm up faster. it gets cold here in northern ohio haha

I wouldn't worry about the back pressure,it should be ok as long as you don't mash the pedal to the floor with it on. I'm not sure on the pcm wire. I hooked 12v directly to the solenoid and ran it manually with a switch.

ok, so having a high idle tune shouldnt do anything? just make sure to turn it off before i take off and i should be ok?
and for the pcm wire, im just gonna cut the pcm wire off and cap that off real good and just run power to it, no chance of cooking the pcm then

sounds like a bad ebp valve or if you hear a click maybe the vacuum solenoid??
anybody have a better idea on that?

yes you can, im here at college in ohio and my roommate has a 2000, i was just talking with him and discovered he did it so im gonna have him show me. he cut both wires to the ebpv and made his own power and ground through a switch.
