Default No Cruise Control on 96 PSD

Hey I have a 96 PSD and have been having some problems with the cruise control. It has been having issues ever since I got the truck back in November of last year. It started out with just cutting out once in a while. Like you'd be driving down the road with it set and without warning it would just quit and you'd start slowing down. But I could always reset it and it would work fine again. Well now it has completely stopped working. I can't set it at all. I don't even know if it is turning on or what is wrong with it. I can't find any help anywhere else online. If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated! I know this is really vague, but I have absolutely no idea where to start looking. Thanks for any help

There is an updated recall for the brake shut off switch for cruise control. (Ford name: speed control system) If you haven't received a notice or already had it replaced, it's 1 possible cause of the problem. We have the recall info if you need it.

There is also a switch on the transmission on the drivers side up by the shifter that has to do with the cc. On mine it was melted and caused the cc to quit occasionally.

Ask about having this recall performed Rocketnut. The switch beginning to fail can cause the shut off in use you described before your speed control stopped working completely.

Ford has made safety Job 1 here and expanded this recall to vehicles that are many miles and years out of warranty for safety reasons. We salute their assuming this leadership role despite the tough market conditions now that 5 foreign owned Automakers are located on U. S. soil. Ford is the only U.S. automaker to locate on Japanese soil and now owns Mazda. The Ford Mazda plant now produces both. The photos below are some areas of the massive Ford Rouge Dearborn Assembly plant in Detroit Michigan. Also there are a few photos of some of the many research, development and other buildings in the Rouge complex. Henry Ford built the original river Rouge complex to unload ship loads of raw materials like steel. Rouge was designed to bring materials directly in transported by hugh container ships. Huge Freighters and barges that traveled across the Great lakes. The Rouge was named after the river Rouge that connected Henry’s complex to Lake Erie. At one time nearly every part of a Ford was made from raw materials that came in one end of the complex. A finished vehicle came out the other end made entirely by Ford at Rouge from raw materials. The Rouge included steel foundarys, machine works, stamping plants for body parts and paint developed by George Washington Carver and Henry Ford. It was many factory’s within one giant complex. George Washington Carver’s research on peanut product extracts for paint development was financed by Henry Ford’s Foundation for education scholarships, the poor in need, and ill children. Mr. Carver had no formal education. He was African American and his ability was noticed by Henry Ford and put to work. Instead of picking peanuts as a farm hand, he became a researcher because of Henry Ford. As you approach The Rough Complex, there’s a sign with an arrow pointing the way in. Today Dearborn simply calls The Rouge Complex-- The Henry Ford.

Detroit Bros Custom Cycles.

The rear of The Detroit Bros custom cycle shop in Ferndale Michigan is shown in one photo. The Detroit Bros custom cycles have been featured on T.V. programs similar to Orange County Choppers w/o the day to day shop soap opera drama. They just build w/o drama and had about 20 customs being built for customers. James stored our new historic machine overnight inside the cycle shop when storms delayed our departure from the Motor City.

We re-commissioned Henry’s machine and put an old American back to work. Henry Ford himself would have too. Monarch still has all parts and op manuals available for this machine. The original order was placed by The United States Dept of Defense. Ford Motor Company re-tooled the Rouge to produce machines for WW-2. Our old American was manufactured in 1942 in Sidney Ohio by Monarch Tool & Die and served for the United States in WW-2. The height of the metal working era due to the war. It was made with purpose and can cut through 12” lengths of solid tool steel 16” in diameter in just one pass!

Super Duty's don't get asked "Who's Your Daddy?". They know, & followed in his foot steps to make tracks of their own. Glancing at the Super Dutys on the lot, as 9000lbs of machine all made from Bethlehem steel U. S. A. rolls by. : )




Detroit Bros Custom Cycles
Located on Woodward Ave, just a few blocks from Ford's first assembly plant replaced by The Rouge complex. It still stands empty today.

Check to make sure your 3rd brake light is working on the back of the cab.

Sounds stupid but if it is burnt out it can cause the cruse control to not work do to the change in current draw or resistance in the system. The cruse looks at the brake light circut (the CC disconnect when it sees brake light switch active)

Do you have the factory towing package with 7 pin trailer connector under the rear bumper?

That's not stupid advice at all. An inter-mitten ground and brake light flicker is all it takes. Or bad bulb.
Converter lock also is determined by that circuit. Resistance changes can cause TCC unlock & rpm drop. The other pcm inputs won't match, and pcm may shut down speed control as a safety measure. Either could cause the erratic or no speed control operation.
1996 & up models:
Also, any conversion to LED brake lights must be done with the correct resistors. They will restore resistance from LED's value back to pcm's lookup value to avoid TCC unlock, shorter converter life and erratic speed control operation.

Remove the weather boot on the connector, check it for tears. Inspect the wiring connections inside the backside of the connector for corrosion. If the boot leaks, you may see green corrosion. Moisture inside can cross circuit to brake lights causing erratic speed control. It can also cross to power, blowing the fuse. Check the master underhood fuse, and cab fuse. Those 2 will cause no speed control. Clean the connector if boot is bad & repair it. Using dielectric grease is a good idea inside that connector.

You can also try cleaning the frame ground for tail lights. Typical location is left side inner side of frame between spring hangers. Look for a bare metal eye connector under a washer head bolt with self tapping threads in that area.

Sorry for not being very active in posting....I finally got around to testing out everything that you all told me and everything tests and works fine with no change in the cruise control.
Is there anything else anyone has for me to try? I'll try anything...Sure would be nice to have that back!
I heard that the PCM controls the cruise control, I was wondering if it was possible for the cruise control part of the PCM to have gone bad? Is there any way to test that if that's possible?
