Default Does the right size air filter matter

My &.3 had a small conical Spectre air filter on it. It is the preoiled kind. Seems very small for a diesel though. 3" inlet pipe to the turbo. Would a 9736 spectre work on this truck? Much larger and it would seem much better air flow...

I will do just that tomorrow and return the other one. Can too small of a filter cause white smoke when it is dirty?

A dirty air filter would cause black smoke from lack of air
