1997 7.3 Lots of white smoke (but easy to start cold)
Hi all ,
I recently bought another powerstroke 1997 super cab 4x4 HD. I have been going through the truck and trying to make sure that I have most everything covered maintenance-wise because I got a great deal on this thing as it was not maintained very well.
In the past few weeks I have done the napa air intake, diamond eye 4"exhaust w/downpipe, rear diff cover from 2008 truck and royal purple75-140, cleaned the ebpv tube and sensor, cam shaft sensor, tensioner pully and belt, alternator, brakes all around, fluids in xfer case and tranny(5 speed by the way....yippee!), and much more.
I cant figure out why this thing is blasting white smoke when it is warming up. I havent pulled the valve covers yet and would love not to if its just a sensor. There is no issue starting in very cold weather, so i am assuming the glow plugs are good.
Also the smoke burns your eyes and is very strong, likely unburned fuel?
Any hep would be much appreciated.
Thanks-Chris

Thats kinda what I was worried about. my 99 powerstroke did have and injector replaced two years ago, but I could feel that cylinder being off. It would jump and shake when idling. The 1997 cranks up very easily and runs great once its warmed up.
Is there any way for me to test injectors without the DTC reader, or should i just bite the bullet and get an AutoEnginuity?

Does anyone think it could just be the orings needing to be replaced on my injectors? Or does the fact that is is easy to get compression and crank up rule that out?

take the valve covers off and start the engine, look at the oil spill spouts on the injectors, if there is one or more not spilling oil, then they are bad injectors.

or at least the injectors are not fireing, could be in the wiring or plugs going to the injectors as well, 7.3's are known for overheating the plugs for the glow plugs and injectors and causing a fault not letting them fire.

did you figure out your problem? my glow plugs are good truck runs great. But same thing when warming up it’s just a cloud of smoke for 10-20 min that just burns your eyes and makes my clothes stink
