The key cylinder interlock is mechanical. It's totally separate from the electrical starter neutral safety circuit. The key interlock is incorporated into the column and the starter neutral safety circuit is incorporated into the switch that _was_ on the auto tranny. That's the thing we have to simulate/bypass, by jumpering the right two wires.

When you say you don't have the connector, do you mean you just have a bunch of bare wires down by the tranny? Or do you still have the actual 8-wire connector like the one pictured?

When you did the first jumpering attempt, and it cranked the starter as soon as you turned the key to RUN, like you described a few posts up - do you remember which two wires you jumpered? What colors were they? And if they're still in the connector, what positions are they in (using the pic above as a guide)?

Gotta love Ford, for taking something as straightforward as this, and changing it from year to year.

Yeah bare wires! The two I connected are red/light blue. And black an orange. The black an orange is the hot one in run posistion. I've tried every wire an none seem to work. Where do these wires go to?

Shoot, so the pic of the connector positions is of no use, then.

There should be eight wires. Two are for the reverse light circuit (you'll eventually wanna hook that up, to be all legit). Two are for the starter circuit (the "holy grail" of this thread...). Two are for the 4x4 shift-on-the-fly (if so equipped). The last two are for the PCM; they tell the PCM what gear the tranny is in (well, they used to, when the auto tranny was there). So our goal is to figure out which two wires are for the starter circuit. My bet is that the red/blue wire is one of them, since at least that's in common with the '95 EVTM.

Longshot I suppose, but who has the tranny and connector now? Can you contact them, and find out what is in those two positions on the pic?

Another option - run your own wire. We can take advantage of the connector down under the dash, the one that should have the jumper block, that would go to the pushrod switch if you had one.

Oh, I know what might provide a clue. You know where the relay is on the fender? There should be just one "small terminal" wire on it. What color(s) is that wire?

I'll look at the wire next time in workin on it. Hopefully tomorrow. Running my own switch sounds good to me cuz I'm getting sick of this. Would you be willing to speak on the phone with me to clear things up?

Or even text

Ok the small wire comin off te starter relay is solid red. And my plug is an eight posistion plug but only 6 are taken. I take it this is cuz I don't have shift on the fly 4x4

Well good, we have a frame of reference. So using the pic above as a reference, looking at the face of the connector with the clip tab thingy on top, counting the wires numbered 1 through 4 on the top row and 5 through 8 on the bottom row, what color are each of the wires (by number), and which two are absent?

And you jumpered the white/orange wire (from 5) with the red/black (from 8)?
