Well Mine wasn't $1800 but $530 hurts just as bad since we are going into Birthday and Holiday season. Guy at the shop got a fully rebuilt unit from his guy in Florida and reprogramed and installed. I'm thinking I could have done the install and Maybe fixed it, but if you want to play you gotta pay. Thats just how it is.. Ford wanted to sell me a half for $500 so I think I came out a little better.

If I thought I could leave the truck down long enough for me to do it, I might have. Guess what I really need to do is get and old one from the junk yard and have a Practice day just to see if I have the skills. All the knowledge can be found here and on the other ford related sites.

I have good one's sitting on the bench that I typically send out to guys who can't go without their truck for a day, you install my good working one on your truck, I take your old one and fix it. Simple.
The write-up's are out there. It's not hard to physically do the solder, it's a PITA to test the things, rip them apart, figure out how to get all that goop off of the board without making a huge mess, fix it, put it back together, test it, take it back apart and re-apply new goop, etc etc...
