I have been running Erics Tunes for a year (Extreme Street) and things seemed fine. Last month I finished getting the last of 11 gauges installed, which was the Autometer HPOP gauge, installed when I did the sinister EGR cooler delete and had the top of the engine apart, so that I could reach the ICP (new sensor installed). ICP sits @ 500 at idle, and goes to 1500, only at wide open throttle does it jump to 4000, then quickly back to 1500. This was odd to me.

But last week I had the truck on a dyno and it acted very weird. It was not consistent over three dyno runs. And the Autometer HPOP gauge would go to 4000, then go bakc to 1500, with open throttle. (This is not the case when de-tuned and stock).

I went to OCDieselshop last night and Bud stuck a computer on it and we drove around. The command sits at 1700 psi for the ICP, and so does the Autometer gauge. Also, the truck overheats, and the gfans are uncontrollable. So we de-tuned the truck, and the fans kicked in and quickly brought the oil and water temps down from 240 degrees F to 220. So I know the 1 year old oil cooler is working good. The fans don't work when tuned with eric's tunes.

The Autometer gauge works perfectly with the truck stock tuned. I also have an ISSPro HPOP gauge that I could try.

Is there someone better than eric for SCT X3 tunes? or someone that can explain why the fans and HPOP gauge go wacky when the tunes are installed?

I went with eric 'cause I heard he was good. But the dyno confirmed that something odd is going on with the truck when tuned, but it's ok when de-tuned.

BY the way, we cleared all codes, & reset everything so that EVERYTHING was working good, verified this, then tuned it back up with the X3 and things went wacky again. I am running stock right now until Eric finishes getting some new tunes cooked for me.

I admit, he seems good, but HE IS QUICK TO RESPOND, and that is something commendable. He seems to take care of his clients.

Any comments or advise?

I'm gonna assume you have talked to Eric about it right? If it's an issue with the tune itself, he will definitely get it fixed for you right away. You have to remember running a tune changes a LOT of things on the truck. Just because your fuel pressure falls flat running a race tune, doesn't mean it's the tunes fault, it just means your stock pump can't keep up... get what I'm saying? Maybe you have signs of an HPOP going out? I know I have one pesky injector that sticks like crazy in the morning. It is horrendous with the tunes on, but fine stock. I don't blame it on the tune, in fact without the tune I wouldn't know about the problem.

Eric will fix you up. I wouldn't turn away from his tuning. I still consider him one of the best.

No, I wasn't bagging on eric at all. If it came across that way, I apologize to him. I think when I deleted the EGR with the sinister egr delete kit, the truck wasn't running at top level anymore. Eric updated the tune for my throttle plate delete and the egr delete, and the truck runs much better.

The HPOP issue appears to be an autometer incompatibility with the way eric tunes his trucks to get better performance. I know he knows his stuff, and I knew he would probably fix this problem, AND HE DID. He was quick. I can only give him props for helping out like he did.

Glad you got it figured out. What exactly is the issue with the gauge if you don't mind me asking?

The Autometer HPOP gauge (from the ICP) reads fine when the truck is untuned, sweeping from 500 at idle, to 4000 psi at full throttle. During full throttle, the ICP stays at 4k psi until you let up.

Tuned, the gauge sits at 500 @ idle also, but would sit at 1700 (most of the time) when driving, only under full throttle it would jump to 4k then quickly drop back down to 1700. When we put the truck on a diagnostic computer, it appeared that the commanded pressure was low, just like the HPOP gauge was showing.

I learned from eric yesterday, and on a forum somewhere, that eric recalibrates the ICP voltage to a larger scale, thus allowing for a smoother pressure buildup; thus the the injectors open up more and are used to their full potential. The new tune I got from eric yesterday makes everything run great, and the HPOP gauge runs better from 500-4000. Eric must've done something to make it operate (the gauge) better.

Bottom line, the gauge can't truly handle the recalibration that eric does, so it doesn't really read true as per the tune. But it does pretty good right now.

I also found out that my Rotella full synthetic 5W40 follows the water temps very closely, within 5 degrees F. I tried Motorcraft regular dino oil 15W40 the past 6 weeks, for a quick cheap oil change while I did some installs, and the oil would ride 20-25 degrees higher than the water. This was under the same 10 mile drive to work, same basic weather temps.

The truck also did not like to start quickly, with a nice snap when running the cheap dino oil. I changed it a few days ago (Rotella full synth) and the truck starts just like it did before I changed the oil from Mobile 1 full synthetic Diesel Truck Oil. I don't want to start a big oil discussion, but synthetic is definitely better; producing a much nicer, smoother and cooler running engine. I think the injectors like the fully synthetic better than the old school dino oil, too.

Long story short....I had an edge platinum on my 6.0. Didn't like it at all. Got on here asked a few questions. Several people told me to get an sct with tunes from innovative diesel. So I did....just put them on last night holy cow it feels like I'm driving a different truck. Shifts very smooth it's very quick and pours black smoke. I know it's not all about the smoke but who doesn't like to paint a beaners face with their window rolled down at a red light....I'm just sayin.

Default Eric at Innovative & Rotella T6 Test vs Motorcraft

Sometimes it's fun to smoke anyone who deserves it. My wife has done it a few times to people who were idiots, and clearly deserved it. Granted TX & CA have a burdensome share of border-crossers, who don't have a lot of experience driving. AS for smoking one race of people, I think there are idiot drivers of every race, including my own. Enough of that.........

Eric at innovative clearly know his stuff. He tunes hundreds and hundreds of trucks every month, if not more. He has years of experience, and I haven't found anyone else who is as good. I know there are some others who are recommended, but.....eric is a sure thing.

It appeared that I had a corrupt file somehow, which caused a minor issue, but nothing much but a small irritation for a few days; but eric fixed my problem with a new tune within a day. He responds quickly. And cannot recommend anyone more for tuning.

On another completely different topic:

For an experiment, I changed the oil with Motorcraft dino oil 15W40; six (6) weeks ago; dino oil for the first time. The truck did not give that nice diesel “crack” with a quick start anymore, starting with the first few times with the Motorocraft dino oil. The dino oil ALWAYS ran 10-25 degrees F above the water temp. I have 11 gauges so that I can monitor everything.

Last week, I changed back to Rotella T6 full synthetic 5W40. The engine “cracked” start for the first time again, like before. Now oil temps run right along with, or cooler, than the water temps, consistently.

Just thought you might find it interesting. My truck is not a fan of dino oil. The full synthetic works much better.

The local Walmart hasn't had the Mobile1 Diesel Truck 5W40 full synthetic for over a year, but they do have the Rotella T6 Full Synth 5W40. That why I switched, it's just easier to stop on by there on the way home from work. Both oils are both about $22 a gallon, so the cost isn't the issue. They both seem to run equally well in my truck. I generally run Mobile1 Full Synth in every car in the family-toyota/dad-f150/mom-mercedes/etc.
