Default Steering

Is there any to tighten up the steering on these trucks? Just seem to have to much play in my steering wheel.

on top of the steering box there is a screw with a lock nut on it. loosen the lock nut and turn the screw, but i don't remember which way you turn it. i think it is in. becareful when you do it because if you turn it in to far your steering will loose "memory". as in it won't straighten the wheels out after making a turn when you loosen your grip on the wheel. we did it on my dads truck one of the work trucks i drove. my truck needs tightened up too. hope this helps.

For easier access, remove the tubing from the inner-cool to the intake elbow. This is as simple as removing the two band clamps. Otherwise, it's a real pain in the butt I found this out when I was installing my Banks Techni-cooler.

Loosen the jam nut, twist inner hex nut clockwise some, tighten jam nut while holding the hex in place. You should be able to feel the lack of slop even without running the motor. Re-assemble plumbing and give it a road test.

You don't want to go too tight, it will put excessive bind/wear on the worm gear thus making it difficult to "self center".

Look up RedHead for steering gear boxes. They match the internals to tighten up the feel. I have read several good reports on post-install reviews.

Do you have any sort of a lift or anything? My buddies is very sloppy, but it's the pitman arm on his.

Nope no lift............... wondering now if this sloppy steering is more common than I thought. Had a safety and alignment about 7000 km ago.( Was sloppy then too) Just thinking if it was a Pittman arm that they would have picked up on that??? (Work was done at ford)

Before and after the lift/dropped pitman arm my steering was not sloppy. But then again, I only have 73,000 miles on my truck

We put a used lift on my buddies truck and the guys that helped him put it on used a "worn out" pitman arm and on top of that I'm not sure how tight they put the nut for the pitman arm. I'm just saying it's an easy point for a "slop" to happen. Just something to check.

Sounds like these other guys have the fix for your problem, I was just trying to offer up a different possible solution.
