New guy with a 6.9
Hey all. I reciently bought an 87 F250. It has the stock 6.9L, T19 4 speed,4x4, D50 front and a Sterling rear axle with 3.55 gears and some sort of locker in the rear.
Gunna have to pull the cover soon and take a look back there.
I'm in SoCal. I have been looking for a nice bricknose with 4x4, extra cab/crew cab and a stick shift when this one showed up at a used car lot in town. The truck was originally sold in Alaska and it had Alaska plates on it when I bought it.
I had not paid much attention to the diesels in these. I'm much more familiar with the gas engines. All the other trucks I looked at locally were garbage. I looked at One with a 460 and could see the rocker arms through the oil fill hole and they were wallowing in sludge!
Then this one showed up and I had to jump on it. Looks like an old man had it. Running boards, camper shell, visor and stock hub caps!
Odometer showed 59,500 miles. May be 159K but it still has all the original hoses and no wear on the brake or clutch pedal. So I don't think it's 159k. It starts right up and runs super smooth.
So far I have removed the running boards and funky cb antenna, replaced the front brakes and added a spin on water seperator since the original one was bypassed.
I really like it! It's a giant leap above the 1973 international pickup it replaced.
Fuel milage isn't as good as I expected. I have been averaging 12mpg in town and 13.8 on the hwy with the cruise set at 70-75mph. Maybe it would do better @60mph?
It does put out some brown smoke when accelerating and pulls hills ok. No turbo so I expected it to be a little sluggish on the hills. It weighs #6500 lbs.
Is there a way to replace the spring on the clutch pedal to make it easier to push down? Good gawd it's stiff.
I paid $3100+ tax for it which I thought was fair from a local dealer considering it's condition.
Anyway here it is. Anybody recognize it?

under the dash there is a big spring.... CAREFULLY !!!!!! I cut mine out with a dremmil tool .... much better... mine is hyd. clutch.. if yours is your in luck ... but if not then check the linkage.. my ol chevy used to freeze in the winter ... not fun when it sticks to the floor......otherwise .. Nice pick up...trade ya.. mines lifted a bit.... also yeah take the factory air cleaner and toss in to the wind... this will make it louder in the cab but totally worth it.... big exhaust helps it breath also.. factory pipe and muffler might be plugged... I'm averaging 18 mpg on the freeway and 16.8mpg... they like royal purple 15/40 synthetic oil ..... thats all I run .. it purrs and accelerates like a turbo truck....I too have the 4 spd 4x4 and 35's ..... you will have to do the leveling kit on the front end to clear the 35's though... not a big lift or anything... wirth every penny.... and yeah I have 3.55's too...
