Default 94 7.3 idi turbo, smoking acting retarded

I bought a 94 ford f250 ext cab, with 7.3 idi turbo, e40d trans 2wd. 3months later have named it after my ex wife. I will just start with the engine.
When I bought it it started right up, hardly any smoke. Guy told me he thought a glow plug was getting bad because it acted up sometime. I think he meant injector. It was fine at first.
Then it started smoking when it felt like it....not when i pushed it or wanted power, but when i left off the gas or went down a hill.
Then if i left it sit for a couple days it was hard starting...well i figured out the o-rings under injector caps were leaking, so I went to international and got new ones.
Fixed the starting problem cause i let it sit for 2 weeks and it fired right up.
still acted up same as before tho, and smoked more at idle then it used to.
i cracked injectors and thought i had one bad one, so i ordered and replaced, still same thing
soo i cracked them again and thought it was another, and swapped out the one i just pulled
still same thing did it again and found another, swapped again......seemed to be ok for a minute or two them back to same thing again. Its getting worse.
Its better on a cold run to work.....8 hours later i come out it smokes it misses, till i get it rolling down the road and get on it.
I need some help on this one. Thanks guys

I've got at 94 IDI turbo and it ran like a bag of *** when I first got it. New IP and injectors cured it. When it's smoking what color is the smoke? If it's grayish and smells like diesel fuel then it's your injector (s). I'm not a fan of replacing 1 or 2 injectors at a time. If you do that you have old worn out injectors popping at a certain pressure and 1 or 2 new injectors popping at a differerent (probably much different) pressure. Much better off to replace them all at once, along with a completely new return line kit. If you're injector pump has much over 100k miles on it, most say it should be replaced when you replace the injectors as well.

If your smoke is white it's probably caused by an air intrusion which could also explain the miss. New return line kit will probably cure that. I suggest a new (not remanufactured) set of BB code injectors and a new return line kit and I'll bet your problem is cured!

There are a couple places I know of that have new BB codes, Pensacola Diesel usually has them and are pretty fair on their price, around $225 for a set of 8 I think. Over on oilburners.net there is a guy named russ, goes by type4, he sells them for around 300 but he matches them to where they POP within 100 psi of each other and includes a return line kit. I'm sure there are other places too, just google bb code injectors. With that mileage you may want to consider a new injector pump, well it'll have to be a remanufactured one cause they dont make new ones anymore. But I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to try just the injectors and return lines first.

Update!!!! I messed around yesterday and found one return line that i didnt replace leaking a little bit, so i replaced....still didnt seem right but i took a ride, after about two miles it quit smoking like a freight train. but still didnt seem quite ride, still smoking when it shouldnt......so when i came back through town i put fuel in my rear tank also.
Then i ran off the rear tank. Today I started it and besides the smoke from being a cold start, 40 degrees this am it was fine. When I left work tonite same thing...so i wonder if my pick up tube for the front tank is messed up. Any way that part is good, now for the e40d problems next ughhhh. But thanks guys for the help, I will order new injectors after i find a new tranny or fix this one.

check the fuel lines on the tank switch...... or possibly check the fuel water sep. on the frame and the lines to it as well ..... i eliminated it and put a bio-glass filter after the mech pump .... then ... if the orig. filter under the hood has a bowl on the bottom scrap it and get a one piece filter .... Baldwin BF-1222..... should find some thing in all that .... if not .... let us know....ROCK ON IDI'S
