starting problem on a 7.3

Re: starting problem on a 7.3
Batteries crapped out again. Averaging six months on a set of batteries. Seems like driver side is always the one that goes out; passenger side is always fine. Thinking I need to replace all the battery cables, but haven't found them anywhere yet. Already rebuilt the alternator.

Does anyone have pics of where the fuel heater and o rings are on an '88 7.3? Is it somewhere in the doohickey that holds the fuel filter? We've changed all sorts of stuff on this truck, replaced some fuel line, still gotta crank like hell to get it to start.
Block heater crapped, so I had a coolant heater installed on the heater hose. (got it for five bucks or so, NEW @ a garage sale some time back) Does this kinda heater have to be plugged in all the time, or can I just plug it in 20 min or so before I start the truck? I've been told the heater switches in the cab need to be on.
