Default Water pump leaking

Just bought this 87 ford f250 with a 6.9l diesel with a snow plow on it. Guy said it "might run hot in the summer" but that he only used it to push snow in the winter.

Drove it just a short distance and it got hot. Water was coming out pretty steady down the front of the block and down the front of the oil pan after I shut it off.

I couldn't actually see the weep hole on the fan shaft under the water pump. I'm just guessing thats where its coming from... I'll take a better look at it tonight.

Anyway... stopped into NAPA and got a price on a rebuilt water pump. Asked the guy if there was anything "special" about this water pump. He said there was a notation in his book that "failure to follow the proper installation instructions may cause the fuel injection pump to fail",,,, or something like that.

SO.... That's where I hit the binders.... I don't want to go any further without a book or somebody who knows about this engine and water pump.

I guess the question I have is..... how hard is it to change the water pump on an 87 6.9l diesel. Any special tools? I don't have a shop... but do have tools.
I'm getting to be an old fart and did chemo for a year last year....that's why I'm a little concerned about tackling this.

The shop said they wanted 300.00 to replace it plus the 60 for the pump....
Even it took me two days to do it and a lot of cheater bars.... it would be worth the 300 to to me. I would rather spend the $300.00 on new belts, filters and fluid changes

Any help would be appreciated.

Thx
Mike

the issue is the top two bolts sometimes are to long with a new pump, causing the bolts to hit the IP gear and break it.

just read the instructions, it isnt to bad of a job. hardest part is getting fan hub off.

Its not a hard job at times it could be frustrating to place the new pump back on with one hand and place bolts with the other. And DieselCrawler Is right the hardest part is getting the fan hub off.

Just compare the old pump to the new one, make sure they are identical. The main thing is to make sure the bolts go back in the same holes so they dont contact any of the gears behind the mounting plate. Dont over tighten the bolts either as you could warp the front cover and cause another leak. You will also need sealer on several of the bolts as well.
