If I need to use a starting aid to help diagnose something or get a diesel going, I use WD-40. That way it ignites quick and has a little lubrication.

I really havent checked the batteries out. its really my weekend truck. id like to make it my DD though. but i heard that they quit putting the "explosive" stuff in WD-40 so it doesnt help starts anymore. But it works for you? Ill have to try it. thanks

It's because the Idi has a precombustion chamber separate from the cylinder that's why they need glow plugs to preheat that chamber. The heat of compression alone at first will not be enough to keep it running on its own also if you have a turbo check the waste gate if its stuck open there is not enough air going into the intake normally to much fuel not enough air situation would have black smoke but if your not warm enough to burn any fuel it will come out as white

yeah i know why they need GPs. But yea at 70 degrees the heat of compression alone would be enough. i have a fuel problem for sure. my IP pump is going bad. a new one should help it. and i also ordered a new GP harness

Greetings and thx for the excellent feedback on the idi...my '93 F-2fitty 4x4 lost the "wait for start" glow plug light, and absolutely will not start even in warm weather...this thread, in particular, explains why....i changed fuel filter even tho it was not that old, no help,
did the evil starter fluid trick, fired up and once hot, i ran errands(new mower, needed truck) in it all day, never letting it get really cold, zero starting issues....aka, zero fuel flow issues, just has to have glow plugs for any temp initial start, got it. went out next morning to confirm, sure enuff, no start. Not gonna do the evil ehter trick, it'll sit there til i get it fixed.

pretty sure it's the fusible link that not even the ford dealer can pull up, but the wiring harness diagram shows the fuseholder lookalike connector end coming out of GP harness, but not the other half that goes right to the relay.... maybe 5'' long, real bitch to get to it appears, runs up under GP/ETR relay. my electrical non-ford manual schematic shows the F-link clearly, not sure WTF is up with that except the age of the truck, but man, it's a diesel, only 250k on it, we have still got miles to go!

given the dedicated connectors this fusible link has, stuns me i cannot pull a part# on it and just get one in my hand b4 i remove that relay.....i know it's old, i hope they got away from them completely, but it's made to be replaced and when I find one, i'm buying 2.

saw elsewhere on the site where someone had installed real fuses(40+amp, yikes!), a mod, to escape the fusible link issues once and for all....like the idea, but not giving up on finding proper replacement yet, this is the only time i have had this issue, and i have started this thing after sitting for a week, covered in snow, many a time in Snowshoe,WV, never blew the link, always had the "wait to start light"....some indication that maybe it's age and others may follow, but 1st things 1st, get it back like it was w/link, verify all good, then maybe do the mod....just bad form to modify anything as a fix....upgrade, ok, but bad way to t-shoot anything unless you simply have no choice(aka, no F-link to be had....).

the description of the idi and why it truly needs the glow plugs, even in warm weather, very helpful, i get it now, just gotta find that link.

hope my 2 cents helps someone else along someday, these forums are priceless troubleshooting aides, really great threads up in here...

onward thru the fog.......

WOW !!!! shor book there .... LOL

Ok so as far as the Fusable link goes... Install a resetable Breaker for the replacment.. works awesome and if for some reason it trips, wait for the breaker to cool , and you will be good to go ..

copy that, thx for the feedback, sure i'll end up doing that eventually, but my truck has never done this before, it's not a re-occuring issue, yet, if it becomes one, 10-4, the relay would be the way to go.

what did the newer design go to to get away from this? what does a 2014 f250 powerstroke do with glow plug circuit protection? apparently has not been fusible link for long time, just curious what the technology evolved to....

apparently generic f-link wire of the correct gauge(current up, gauge up, just like a real fuse ribbon) can be had, and then i will have to use the existing connectors off the blown link to get it back like it was and see if i have a real problem that blew the link(bad relay, burnt wires, that kinda fun stuff) or maybe the guy down at the tire store tried to start it while glow plug light on and cooked it with over current(this would be the real reason for that "wait for start" light, eh?)

thx again for the feedback and support, priceless.

I have staerted my truck col swith WTS light on plenty of times ... the fuesable links just get weak over time ..

The new trucks are using Max fuses or a sealed circut breaker On the GP controller
