Default Holset turbo on a 7.3 IDI

So my buddy is getting rid of his holset turbo off his 2005 5.9 24v cummins. My question is, what all will I have to do to safely use this turbo on my truck? My truck has a factory turbo. It's a 93 7.3 turbo diesel. It's a Garett turbo. So if someone could help that'd be great! Thanks

The holset turbo type is an He351

Safely? NOPE!

To make the one you want work on your engine you have to custom make everything then once it starts blowing air it will be out of range for your engine. You need about 10psi of boost.
More boost and you need to upgrade your engine with studs, camshaft and so on.
Your IP will only spit out so much fuel per cylinder anyway so stick with 10lbs boost.
I belive you can upgrade the OEM turbo with parts from ATS, the only problem is ATS is out of stock and you have to find someone that will let those pieces go. They use to make upgrade hot side manifolds and downpipes for the OEM turbo.

There is currently some individuals working on supplying performance items for our engines.

You can do it safely its just not easy. It won't mount in the factory location cuz it's to big. Go to YouTube and look up 91dirtydiesel. That turbo can safely run 10-15 psi. Studs are a good idea. But if you are going to mods your idi someday I'd get the turbo and go from there.
