Default 7.3 IDI turbo diesel question

Hey guys. I just now created this account so I'm new to the site. Sorry for any confusion.

Anyways.. I bought a 1993 f250 IDI turbo diesel. From what I've researched it has the factory Garrett turbo on it. I have been thinking about upgrading the turbo on it. I'm not really good with turbo modifications at all so what all would I have to do? I don't know what type of turbo to get either. My buddy told me I could fit a holset turbo off a cummins on it? I'm not really sure if he was truthful or not. So if someone could help me out that would be great!

Thanks!

Not completely sure of what turbos to put on but anything over around 12 psi constantly your gonna blow your head gaskets so there's no point unless you replace the gaskets and stud the heads. These engines can't take that much boost. My turbo on my 94 idi turbo has been replaced with a banks sidewinder with the waste gate that's plugged and closed and I have pushed 15 psi and I don't even recommend that

you need to get ARP head studs and you can replace the bolts by pulling them out one at a time and screwing in the head studs. not ideal but it can be done with good results. and the "cummins" turbo is called a holset HY35 or 25. very good robust turbo. its can be ajusted to run 5-40 psi (43psi is were they break, trust me) what im not sure about is weather you have to modify the turbo mount in your truck for the new turbo or not. a holset turbo can be had for around 300 bucks on craigslist and rebuilt for 400ish. i think that this is a good mod though but exhaust temps can get high with even a smidge more boost so be careful
