S-10 Kubota Diesel Conversion
Not a bad idea but I think the manifolds will flow plenty unless you do extensive modifications so the motor can handle more boost. I got my manifold off a bobcat skid steer, it had an idi 2203. Looks better than the reefer manifold and has a more common square flange with 4 bolt holes.
So I've been studying on removing or modifying the governor and I have decided, at least in theory, that a diesel engine won't run without a governor. If I'm missing something someone let me know but here are my thoughts. The mechanical governor in a diesel engine plays a dual role. Everyone's first thought is that it controls the engines max RPM's, and of course it does, this is why we modify the spring tension in the Kubotas. But, the governor also controls the minimum RPM as well. In other words, if you force the engine below it's governor minimum rpm, usually by idling along without your foot on the gas, and the engine RPM's drop because of a hill or grade the governor will add fuel to keep the engine from stalling. Most often, when the governor adds fuel it will add more than necessary and for a split second the engine will rev above it normal idle. This will only occur in manual transmission vehicles as an automatic would simply disengage and stop. In the Kubota engine there is a tiny spring that attaches to the inside of the front cover and runs back to the fuel rail. This spring keeps the fuel rail pulled forward against the centrifugal force of the governor. Even at idle the governor creates centrifugal force, just not very much. If the RPM's fall below the tension of the spring, the spring pulls the fuel rail forward and adds fuel to keep the engine from stalling. The tiny spring also pulls the fuel rail completely forward when the engine is stopped thus adding fuel for starting. Further, if the fuel rail isn't positioned correctly the engine will not idle or run correctly. So, with all that said, I do not believe you could remove the governor from any diesel engine, and all diesel engines have governors.
hey guys. I just got my adapter plate from steve at cwf mfg in cookeville tn and got it on the motor. I fabbed up the motor mounts and dropped the engine in for a test fit over the weekend. I am still waiting on my flywheel from dennis at diesel repower but i have some questions...1 I had a 2.3L in it before and I copied the throttle linkage set up seen several pages back but my throttle cable it just too short. What is everyone doing for the cable on the rangers. Is the 4.0 cable longer....? Also coolant hoses mainly just asking about the lower but any help would be great. I will get some pics up as soon as I can!

FTE, Turbo6Bar and Usedkubotaman, thank you for all your help. My truck is finally up and running and Im working out the kinks! I am pleased with the way it runs for now, it blows a lot of smoke so I need to bring the rack back in. I haven't checked the MPG I have only put 200 miles on it so far. I will say it runs very cool, I need to swap the gov spring out from the 2800 to a custom one and adjust the throttle linkage a bit. The 2.9 cable is a little different than the 2.3l cable so I do have some adjustments there to make. I am seeing top speeds of about 70 mph right now but messing with the springs and tire sizes should help that... I have 3.45 in the rear with some tiny tiny tires on it. FTE I see you are running the same gears with larger tires so that is my next move. I am experiencing a run-a-way as its called where when I take the load off the motor it wants to hold its speed or over rev, I think this may be due to the fuel rack dumping excessive fuel to the cylinders. I didn't intentionally move the rack out but I had to replace the nuts on the screw and I think when I removed the old seized ones it excessively backed the rack out. I will try and put some pics on here and again thanks for the help I will keep you al updated!
