yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think its something else. I just cant see the motor seizing up on me on my shop floor in a few months. I was using the starter to try and turn the engine, that's when I discovered that it wouldn't budge.... but I may pull it and see if that's the problem.
I never saw it run, I bought it pulled. He had it sitting in his car port for a year or so. Like I said, I cranked it over with a bar on the crankshaft and it did turn. So I'm a bit stumped. I was pressing to get it done by next weekend, but it looks like that's not going to happen.

Im not sure about the om617 but I have had problems with other motors when the flywheel bolts are too long it can lock the motor. also my om617 gets stuck sometimes. I cant explain it. try going threw the starter hole and turning it with a pry bar on the flywheel teeth. if that dont work pull it back out and check fly wheel to every thing clearance. thats what i would do

Clockwise from standing in front of the motor or from the rear of the motor? I always get confused when folks refer to the right side or left side too.

this is a quote and picture from diesel giant
If you have ever tried to turn the engine over by the crankshaft bolt, you know it is almost
impossible to get to with the fan etc. on. Use your 22mm wrench and turn the engine by the
power steering pump bolt. Yes you need to make sure you belt is tight to specs.
***Always turn clockwise, never counter clockwise!

is it clockwise from the front of the motor? Walkenvol makes a good point.

Check the front pulley where the pin is on the pulley bent my over putting the motor and it will lock it up, Vette
I think it might be the timing pin or for the tach not sure.

well, I dropped the trans and took of the flywheel and still no movement.
I haven't taken the adapter plate off, but I cant see that causing any problems.
I did hit the crank with a rubber hammer a bit so I could get my crank shaft adapter in to the crankshaft. Could that have messed something up?
The crank seems to be moving about a half a degree back and forth now, its more than likely from cranking on it for a couple of days. Its making a bit of noise in the engine, a bit of a hiss.
